A CHRISTMAS CAROL - BROADWAY 2019

Lanterns (hundreds...) and bells and chains for A Christmas Carol at Propstar, designed by Rob Howell for Broadway.

Lanterns

In total, with a team of 1-2 other painters and a few other helpers to shuffle lanterns and keep things moving, I painted about 600 lanterns for this production of A Christmas Carol at the Lyceum Theatre.

Lantern Detail

The process was essentially spraying lanterns with a tinted shellac/denatured alcohol mixture, sprinkling on powder cement for texture, and then spraying again to bring it all to color. I treated dozens of feet of plastic chain with the same color treatment of shellac/denatured mixture.

Lanterns

While most of the lanterns were high above patrons heads, the ones that went into the balconies were quite close to people and could be seen in greater detail - so, each lantern had to look good enough for 2-3ft scrutiny.

Final Look

Bells

In addition to the lanterns, I also painted about 40 planters of varying design and material to be bells for the production.
